Student Spotlight: Rolando

From La Unión, Honduras to College Graduate: Rolando’s Story of Opportunity and Hope

One of the greatest joys of the Casa de Esperanza scholarship program is watching young people grow into leaders who are prepared to make a difference in the world. Today, we are excited to share the story of Rolando, whose journey reflects the very heart of our mission.

Rolando was raised in the small mountain town of La Unión, Lempira, Honduras, where he learned the values of hard work, faith, family, and community. Although he was raised by his uncle, Gilberto, and his family rather than by his biological parents, he never lacked love or support. Alongside his cousins Allan, Cristian, and Sofia, he was given a home, encouragement, and the opportunity to dream about a brighter future.

Reflecting on his childhood, Rolando says that everything he is today is rooted in the sacrifices and care his family poured into him. Their example taught him to work hard, help others, and treat people with kindness, humility, and compassion.

When the opportunity came to attend Grace College in Indiana, Rolando embraced the challenge. Leaving Honduras and moving to a different country was not easy. Like many international students, he faced loneliness, culture shock, and the pressures of balancing academics, work, leadership responsibilities, and personal growth. Yet those very challenges became opportunities for growth.

“Those experiences pushed me to become stronger, more independent, and more confident in myself and my abilities,” Rolando shared.

At Grace College, Rolando found more than an education. He found a community. The integration of faith into everyday life, along with the support of professors, mentors, and friends, helped him flourish academically, personally, and spiritually.

His lifelong passion for creativity led him to pursue a degree in Graphic Design with a minor in Photography. What began as a love for drawing and creating as a child eventually developed into a calling.

“Design is not just about making things look good,” Rolando explains. “It’s about communication, storytelling, and helping people connect with ideas and emotions.”

Throughout college, Rolando discovered leadership abilities he never knew he possessed. He learned the importance of resilience, vulnerability, and trusting God through uncertain seasons. Along the way, many people invested in his life, including mentors who encouraged him during difficult times. One individual in particular, Scott Sterenberg, became a father figure and source of constant support throughout his college journey.

Now, as a graduate of Grace College, Rolando looks toward the future with gratitude and purpose. He hopes to build a career as a graphic designer, creating meaningful work that helps organizations, businesses, and communities tell their stories effectively. At the same time, he remains committed to giving back to Honduras and encouraging young people who come from backgrounds similar to his own.

“I want others to know that their background does not limit what they can achieve,” Rolando says.

His advice to incoming students reflects the lessons he has learned along the way:

“Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Some of the best experiences, friendships, and opportunities come when you say yes to things that feel scary at first. Ask for help when you need it, build relationships with people around you, and remember that growth takes time.”

Rolando’s story is a powerful example of what can happen when determination, faith, family support, and educational opportunity come together. From a small town in western Honduras to earning a college degree in the United States, he has demonstrated perseverance, character, and a commitment to serving others.

Stories like Rolando’s are possible because of faithful supporters like you. Through the Casa de Esperanza Education Program, students receive far more than financial assistance.
